PART 1 - GENERAL
1.1 SUMMARY
A. Provide lathing, cement-based hardcoat and
finish coat with supplemental products for application over substrates
indicated.
1.2 RELATION SECTIONS
A. 07620 Sheet Metal flashing and Trim.
B. 09250 Gypsum Board Assemblies.
1.3 QUALITY ASSURANCE
A. The applicator shall have a minimum of five
(5) years proven satisfactory experience in work similar to that
required by this section. If requested by Consultant, Contractor
to provide proof prior to commencement of work that a qualified
crew of stucco applicators will be maintained throughout the duration
of the work.
B. Conform to Manufacturer's specification and detail requirements
contained in the Manufacturer's manual, latest edition, for stucco
system products including preparation, detailing and application
of materials.
C. Manufacturer to review site prior to and periodically during
work to confirm application in accordance with their recommendations.
Provide written report upon request by Consultant.
D. Section 9.3 - Stucco of the Association of Wall and Ceiling Contractors
(AWCC) Specification Standards Manual, BCWCA Stucco Resource Guide,
together with authorized additions and amendments, forms part of
this project specification. A copy of these manuals will be kept
on site by the applicator.
E. Where modifications to the AWCC Specification Standards Manual
are included in this project specification, then such modifications
shall govern in case of conflict.
F. Reference in these project specifications to Section Numbers,
Parts and Item numbers means those Sections, Parts and Items contained
within Section 9.3 of the AWCC Specifications Standards Manual.
1.4 SAMPLES AND MOCK-UPS
A. A mock-up is required at a location selected
by the Consultant. The mock-up shall be completed and accepted prior
to work proceeding. The mock-up shall include flashings, stucco
trim, reveals, corner bead, stops and control joints and complete
stucco base coats including proposed finishes. Upon acceptance by
the Consultant, the mock-up may remain as part of the finished work.
The sample panel shall be a minimum of 10m by 10m in size. The mock-up
may remain as part of the finished work when approved by the Consultant.
B. When requested, prepare a designated surface area (in each texture/colour
scheme) to requirements specified herein, with specified system
showing workmanship for review and approval. If approved, surface
area shall become acceptable standard of finish quality and workmanship
for similar on-site work.
1.5 SUBMITTALS
A. Submit the following items in accordance
with Section 01330 Submittal Procedures.
B. Product Data: For system components including colour selection
card.
C. Submit manufacturer's product technical literature and specifications
including proprietary components, installation instructions and
recommendations for review.
D. Colour and texture to be approved by the Consultant and to match
existing.
E. Submit two sets of stucco samples texture and colour two feet
by two fee for review and/or selection.
1.6 PRODUCT DELIVERY/STORAGE/HANDLING
A. Deliver and store all material and pre-packaged,
manufactured stucco products undamaged in original wrappings or
containers, with manufacturer's labels and seals intact.
B. Keep materials dry, off the ground, under cover, free from exposure,
dampness and freezing and in accordance with manufacturer's requirements.
C. Remove any wet or deteriorated materials unsatisfactory for installation
from the site.
1.7 WARRANTY
A. Provide 5-year manufacturer warranty for
material defects for complete stucco system (base coats and finish
coats).
2. PRODUCTS
2.1 STUCCO BASE COAT MATERIALS
A. Basecoats:
In accordance with AWCC Section 9.3.
Preswitt Beta-Wall - premixed glass fibre reinforced in accordance
with manufacturer's instructions.
B. Water - potable, clean and free form injurious amounts of oil,
acid, alkali, organic matter or other deleterious substances.
C. Sand - conform to ASTM C897, natural or manufactured, clean,
sharp and free of loam, clay, silt, soluble salts and organic matter,
freshwater washed. Sampling and testing to conform to ASTM C144.
- 1040 Stucco Sand by Lafarge.
2.2 BONDING AGENT
A. Surface primer for application of stucco
parging to masonry or concrete surfaces - non-oxidizing, non-crystallizing,
and non-re-emulsifiable type conforming to ASTM C932, used to improve
bond strength and adhesion: shall conform to Section 9.3 - Part
2, Item 2.1.
2.3 STUCCO FINISH COAT
A. Finish coat is to be by same Manufacturer
as base coat (scratch and brown).
B. Manufacturer to confirm installed finish coat to provide adequate
performance for a minimum of 5-yuears including no noticeable loss
of bond, colour retention, cracking, bleeding, blushing, blistering,
chalking, efflorescence, mildew growth, etc.
C. Finish colours and textures as approved by the Consultant.
D. Primer in accordance with manufacturer's written recommendations.
E. Acceptable products: Preswitt Quality Finish
2. EXECUTION
2.1 PREPARATION
A. Prepare the surfaces to receive stucco in
accordance with Section 9.3 - Part 3, Item 3 as applicable.
B. Prior to commencement of work, review all conditions and thoroughly
inspect all substrates and surfaces scheduled to receive stucco
and report in writing to the Consultant any conditions or surfaces
that will adversely affect proper installation of specified stucco
system.
C. No work shall commence until all such adverse conditions and
defects have been corrected and surfaces and conditions are acceptable.
Commencement of work implies acceptance of surfaces or conditions
to receive stucco.
D. Perform no stucco work when the ambient air and substrate temperatures
are below 5ºC (40ºF) or above 38ºC (100ºF) for
24 hours before, during, and after stucco application.
E. Confirm all stucco panels are 144 ft2 or less in size. Notify
the Consultant in writing any areas greater than 144 ft2 prior to
commencing work.
F. Do not use frozen materials or apply stucco materials to frozen
surfaces or surfaces containing frost.
G. Verify that framing, sheathing, flashing paper and flashing assembly
meets minimum Reference Standards noted and stucco installation
requirements.
H. Ensure lath, furring, accessories and trim are tight and fastened
securely in place and fixtures, conduits, pipes, cables and outlets
are properly plugged, capped or covered before commencing stucco
application.
I. Protect all adjacent surfaces and areas from any damage by stucco
operations and make good any damage caused by failure to provide
such protection.
J. Apply stucco to clean, adequately prepared surfaces free form
dust, dirt or other deleterious substances.
K. Take necessary care to identify and protect adjacent surfaces
from damage from stucco application.
L. Provide adequate protection from contaminates and the weather
for substrates prior to application of stucco and for stucco coat
applications. Maintain in place until stucco is adequately cured.
2.2 MIXING
A. Ensure mixer, hoses, pumping and other equipment
are clean and free of contamination during mixing and application
of materials.
B. All materials and ingredients used shall be clean and uncontaminated.
C. Do not use household detergents, plasticizers or other admixtures,
except those permitted by Manufacturer.
D. Do not use frozen, caked or lumpy material and remove all contaminated
materials from the job site.
E. Mix proportions by volume using standard accurate measuring device
and known volumes for all materials and full bag increments.
F. Use shovel count for measuring sand only if standardized first.
G. Sequential batches to be proportionally alike. Size batches for
complete use within one hour after mixing.
H. Mix manufactured products in strict accordance with manufacturer's
written instructions and unless otherwise approved, mechanically
mix all ingredients.
I. Withhold 10% of mixing water until mixing is nearly complete,
then add remainder as required to produce desired working consistency.
Do not over water.
2.3 PROPORTIONING
A. Proportioning stucco basecoats in accordance
with Manufacturer's written instructions.
2.4 APPLICATION OF STUCC BASE COATS
A. Apply stucco base coats in accordance with
Manufacturer's written instructions and this specification.
B. Apply stucco base coats to entire wall panel interrupted only
at junctions of plaster planes, at openings or at control joints
in one continuous operation using trowel or machine.
C. Apply first base coat (scratch coat) to completely embed lath
to a minimum thickness of 10 mm (3/8") and thick enough to
allow for a uniform and shallow scoring of the surface to approx.
3 mm deep (1/8").
D. Scratch coat is to key in to corner beads and stops uniformly
so as not to result in any voids after brown coat is installed.
E. Allow first base coat (scratch coat) to cure before applying
second basecoat (brown coat).
F. Apply second base coat (brown coat) to a maximum thickness of
10 mm (3/8") over a damped first coat with sufficient material
and pressure to ensure a tight uniform bond to the first coat but
not to deform or crack the first coat. If required, apply a fine
spray of clean water to first oat, so as to dampen it only. Do not
saturate. Allow water sheen to disappear before applying the second
coat.
G. Second base coat (brown coat) application to bring the combined
total system thickness to 19 mm (3/4").
H. Rod the second base coat (brown coat) to a true, even plane,
filling surface defects with cement plaster and trowel-float surface
uniformly after it has set and when moisture is still present in
it. Follow by darbying to provide smooth surface for finish coat.
The surface shall have no variation greater than 6 mm (1/4")
in any direction under a 1524 mm (5') straight edge.
I. Uniformly cover corner beads corner wire with brown coat. Do
not use corner wire as a screed.
J. Where existing stucco thickness does not conform to .6 above,
notify Consultant for direction and correct as required.
2.5 CURING OF STUCCO BASE COATS
A. Protect stucco surfaces from uneven and excessive
evaporation during hot, dry or windy weather.
B. Moist cure cement based stucco with clean water to maintain plaster
uniformly moist.
C. Allow first base coat (scratch coat) to cure for a minimum of
24 hours before second base coat application proceeds.
D. Allow second base coat (brown coat) to cure for a minimum of
7 days following application and prior to application of stucco
finish coats. The second base coat cur time will be reviewed and
modified by the Consultant depending on environmental conditions.
E. Provide adequate protection (plastic sheets) to retard evaporation
where extreme conditions occur.
F. Moist cure base coats only when exterior temperature is 5ºC
or above.
2.6 FEATURE BANDS
A. Install coloured feature bands as indicated
to match existing arch configuration. Feature bands are done with
different colour of finish coat and do not require EIFS work.
2.7 ACRYLIC STUCCO FINISH COAT
A. Ensure that the surface temperature of substrate
is above 5ºC for a minimum of 24 hours during and after application
of finish coat.
B. Ensure all future sealant joints are taped off.
C. Install selected finish coat in accordance with manufacturer's
requirements.
D. Apply material in one continuous operation and/or finish entire
sections of wall areas at one time. Interrupt application only at
natural breaks in construction.
E. Avoid application of separate batches of finish side-by-side
or application of finish coat materials in direct sunlight and excessive
wind.
F. Spread an even coat of finish coat material using a trowel, working
away form wet edge of material previously applied.
G. Apply stucco finish coat in accordance with Section 9.3 - Part
3, Item 9.
2.8 CURING OF FINISH COAT
A. Curing finish coat material in accordance
with manufacturer's system requirements.
B. Provide adequate protection to retard evaporation where extreme
conditions occur.
2.9 ADJUST AND CLEAN
A. Remove waste and excess material off site
at completion of stucco work; repair and make good any defects to
any other work caused by this application.
B. Promptly remove all droppings
